A high score on the Mediterranean diet was associated with a 21% lower chance of having any adverse pregnancy outcome

a 28% and 37% lower risk of preeclampsia/eclampsia and gestational diabetes.

A 2022 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics indicates that pregnancy-related mortality

in the United States has increased over the past 30 years, with significant disparities by race and maternal age.

Adverse outcomes of pregnancy (APOs) are the main factors of morbidity and mortality,

A study by researchers at Cedars-Sinai’s Smidt Heart Institute evaluated the Mediterranean diet and adverse pregnancy outcomes,

finding that women conceived while following the anti-inflammatory diet had a significantly lower risk of developing Preeclampsia.

They also noted that the association was strongest in women traditionally considered advanced maternal age, those 35 and older.

Preeclampsia is a severe blood pressure disorder that develops during pregnancy and stresses the mother’s heart. Left untreated, it can lead to severe complications

, including weakened kidney and liver function and decreased blood supply to the fetus.

In addition to Preeclampsia, the risk of gestational diabetes decreased in women who followed the heart-healthy diet more closely.

The study was part of the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-to-be, which included 10,038 women between 2010 and 2013. Women pregnant with their first child were asked to fill out a semi-quantitative questionnaire about food frequency during the first study visit,

which occurred in the first trimester.

The responses were then categorized into the nine components of the Mediterranean diet (vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, legumes, fish,

Previously, only three observational studies – each with a modest number of participants –

had investigated the association of adherence to this healthy dietary pattern around conception.

The team state that long-term studies are needed to assess whether promoting a Mediterranean-style diet at the time of birth and throughout pregnancy can

prevent adverse pregnancy outcomes and reduce future cardiovascular risk.
